March 3, 2012, is the kick off for the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves Spring Training. The 2012 season for the Houston Astros will mark both the 50^th Anniversary of Major League Baseball in Houston, and the Astros 28^th season of Spring Training at the Osceola Country Stadium in Kissimmee. The Astros begin the 2012 Grapefruit League schedule with their Spring Home Opener on Saturday, March 3 vs. the Washington Nationals.

 In 1985 Osceola County Stadium became the Spring Training home of the Houston Astros when the team relocated from Cocoa Beach to Kissimmee. When it opened, the complex was considered “state- of- the art” and the best of its kind in Florida. The complex’s unique “cloverleaf” design has served as a blueprint for many teams as they began building new facilities.

In addition to moving the Houston Astros to Osceola County, the organization moved their Florida State League club from Daytona Beach and called them the Osceola Astros. In 1995, the club changed its name to better reflect the area by becoming the Kissimmee Cobras. The Cobras won the Florida State League championship in 1999. The Single A club participated in the Florida State League from 1985-2000. At the close of the 2000 season, the Astros farm club had promoted 97 players and coaches to the major leagues. The pioneers called it Hog Island, but it became Honeymoon Isle in 1939 when a New York developer built 50 palm-thatched bungalows for honeymooners. Today, visitors can drive across the Dunedin Causeway to enjoy the sun-drenched Gulf beaches, mangrove swamps, and tidal flats. Nature lovers will find osprey nests, a wide variety of shorebirds, and one of the few remaining virgin slash pine forests in South Florida. The park boasts several nature trails and bird observation areas. Visitors can swim, fish, and snorkel in the warm waters of the Gulf or picnic while they enjoy the beautiful scenery. Shelling is particularly good here, as the Gulf currents deposit an incredible variety of seashells on the shore. Showers are available and the park’s concession has a gift shop and snack bar.

Honeymoon Island State park, located just a short drive is the perfect place to go when looking for outdoor recreational entertainment in the Central Florida area. The South Beach Pavilion provides bicycles to rent by the hour or day and kayaks are available at Café Honeymoon. Both facilities offer beach chair and umbrella rentals for a nominal fee and their decks are known for having great views of the gulf. Of course, there’s always plenty of space for just soaking up the sun on the beach! Heading out to the nature trails will give you ample opportunities to run into the inhabitants of the island. While Osprey are the norm, keep an eye out for the gopher tortoise crossing your path, the armadillo foraging for food, or the raccoon scurrying off into the woods.

Beaches

With approximately 4 miles of shoreline, beach lovers will find a variety of activities with areas designated for swimming on the main beach, a pet beach on the south end and great shelling and walking on the north end.

Fishing

Surf and pass fishing can yield catches of flounder, snook, trout, redfish, snapper, whiting, sheepshead, pompano, Spanish mackerel, cobia ladyfish and tarpon.

Wildlife Viewing

Honeymoon Island is home to many actively nesting birds including Osprey, Oyster catchers, Snowy Plovers and Least Terns. Spoonbills, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons and many other species are often observed feeding in the bay, beaches and estuaries surround the park. Gopher tortoises and armadillos can be found in the picnic area and along the nature trail.

Gentlemen, start your engines! July 2, 2011 Central Florida will welcome the 53^nd annual Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca Cola NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.  This race begins at sundown on one of the biggest American holidays of the summer…July 4^th weekend.

 The Coke Zero 400 is a 160 lap, 400 mile night time race run by some of NASCAR’s biggest superstars. This race attracts the sport’s most famous stars and cars in the NASCAR Sprint Series. Fans will get their red-white-and-blue on for all the action at the 52^nd annual race day weekend.

Martina McBride will perform a 60 minute pre-race concert prior to the 53^rd annual Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday night, July 2. All race fans that purchase a Pre-Race Sprint FANZONE access pass for the Coke Zero 400 in addition to a race ticket will be able to view McBride’s Coke Zero 400 Pre-Race Show as well as the driver introductions from the infield grass tri-oval area.

McBride is a four-time Country Music  Association Female Vocalist of the Year, three-time American Country Music Female Vocalist of the Year and a Grammy winning recording artist with more than 18 million in album sales and 24 top-10 singles, including six that reached No.1.

McBride, whose hits include “Independence Day,” “Wild Angels,” “A Broken Wing,” “Blessed,” “Concrete Angel,” and “This Ones for the Girls,” recently signed with Big Machine Label Group’s Republic Nashville and is currently in the studio recording her 11^th studio album that will be released later this year.

In 1959, the race was originally scheduled to be a USAC Championship (Indy) Car event. However, after a crash-filled event in April, open wheel racing on the oval was permanently canceled. NASCAR quickly stepped in and replaced the schedule with a stock car race.

The race was developed to provide a second major Cup-level racing event for the Daytona International Speedway which would not detract from the legendary status of the Daytona 500. At its creation in 1959, the race was 100 laps for 250 miles, and owing to the scheduling on the July 4^th, was nicknamed the Firecracker 250. In 1963 the race was expanded from 100 laps to 160 laps, for a distance of 400 miles, and became known as the Firecracker 400.

 In 1985, the race became known as the Pepsi Firecracker 400, when PepsiCo became the title sponsor. In 1989, the “Firecracker” name was dropped, and the race was known simply as the Pepsi 400 through 2007. From 1998-2002, the rave was often subtitled the Pepsi 400, held at Michigan during that period.

 The renowned nationally syndicated radio personality, Bubba The Love Sponge® will serve as Honorary Pace Car driver for the 53^rd annual Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, July 2 and will participate in a special ticket package built around the Independence Day holiday weekend.

 As Honorary Pace Car driver, Bubba will be behind the wheel of the Dodge Charger pace car as he leads the 43 car field to the green flag for the 160-lap, 400-mile Independence Day holiday classic under the lights at Daytona.
